AILA Doc. No. 08020862 | Dated September 28, 2017
On September 17, 1787, thirty-nine brave men signed the U.S. Constitution, recognizing all who are born in the United States or by naturalization, as citizens. AILA Citizenship Day celebrates this important day in our nation’s history by hosting workshops around the country that provide free or low-cost assistance to legal permanent residents eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship. In light of recent announcements by the administration to rescind DACA, some of these workshops may also be offering DACA-related services to Dreamers in need of assistance.
AILA’s 11th Annual Citizenship Day event will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Citizenship Day is a single-day nationwide event hosted by AILA chapters across the country and their local grassroots partners. Each year, Citizenship Day helps thousands of eligible legal permanent residents to prepare and apply for U.S. naturalization. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Immigration Statistics, in 2014 8,880,000 legal permanent residents were eligible to naturalize.
In addition to the need for assistance with naturalization, the recent decision to rescind DACA has endangered the lives of nearly 800,000 Dreamers. As a result, some Citizenship Day workshops across the country may offer screenings for immigration benefits and DACA renewal services.
In a year fraught with negativity and fear surrounding the word “immigration”, this annual event is taking on greater meaning. Citizenship and DACA workshops hosted by AILA chapters and affiliates will help create a safe and welcoming place for all immigrants and highlight the beautiful and powerful impact of immigrants in the United States.
