On June 18, 2018, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen delivered remarks at the White House Press Briefing about immigration and the southern border. She called on Congress to close “three major loopholes” that she claims “create a functionally open border.” In particular, Secretary Nielsen called for Congress to reform the 2008 Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) and U.S. asylum laws, as well as amend the Flores Settlement agreement and recent expansions to allow for family detention. She also urged Congress to fund family detention.
