AILA Hosts Telebriefing on the Treatment of Immigrants in Detention During the COVID-19 Pandemic
On May 21, 2020, AILA and the American Immigration Council, through their joint initiative, the Immigration Justice Campaign, hosted a telebriefing targeted to Hill staffers, which discussed the U.S. treatment of immigrants in detention. This briefing highlighted the U.S. government’s failure to take urgent action to stem the spread of COVID-19 within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. This briefing included policy recommendations from Katy Murdza, Advocacy Manager at the Immigration Justice Campaign, Greg Chen, Senior Director of Government Relations at AILA, and the story of Eva, a former detainee at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center and Cuban asylum seeker.
