WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) recognizes Susan G. Roy with the 2024 Sam Williamson Mentor Award, in acknowledgment of her outstanding efforts and excellent counsel to immigration attorneys by providing mentoring assistance.

Reading through the nomination, Ms. Roy is described as having a “passion to help her fellow colleagues with complex and simple matters” that is “never ending;” her character is lauded as “selfless.”

She recently mentored a newer attorney for a heartbreaking Afghan asylum case, even with a heavy case load and looming deadlines. Her commitment to find a way to mentor the attorney speaks to Ms. Roy’s love and passion to help her colleagues whenever she can. She makes herself available to anyone on workdays or weekends. As her nominator noted, “She will respond to an email, phone call or text if someone has a question. day or night. Whether it’s a complex issue in immigration court, or before USCIS, she will talk through issues, and offer her perspective.”

She is a regular speaker at both national conferences and local chapter meetings. She has freely shared her experience as a U.S. Department of Justice Attorney Advisor (Board of Immigration Appeals), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Senior Attorney, and U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review Immigration Judge through many panels, seminars, and law school classes. This area of law is extremely complex, and it is through mentors like Susan G. Roy that the next generation of attorneys can learn from the best and prepare themselves to be zealous advocates for their clients.
