USCIS Reestablishes Deferred Action After AILA and Members Campaign for Agency Accountability

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) welcomed the news that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will reestablish the previous process allowing vulnerable individuals to request deferred action when faced with life-changing circumstances.
AILA Executive Director Ben Johnson said, “We welcome the decision of the agency to reverse the change in policy. Impacted clients, many of them children, brought the cruelty of this rescission to light through their bravery and courage sharing their stories with the agency, the media, and Congress. It cannot be overstated how many lives will be helped, indeed saved, by this decision that comes soon after the House Congressional Oversight Committee conducted a hearing shedding light on their plight. We thank our members for championing their clients’ cases, members of the legal and healthcare communities for their advocacy, the leaders in Congress for the rigorous oversight, and USCIS for recognizing it was headed in the wrong direction.”
